Ladies fine performance against Aldeburgh
Having reached the semi-final round of this 36 hole foursomes competition for the first time in the club’s history with an away win last month, the team travelled to Halesworth to play Aldeburgh. Once again three members of our team were playing off 20 on the day, below their actual handicaps. What a day it proved to be, with the weather much better than expected in the morning and our third pair, Margaret Upton and Kim Worne starting off by winning the first 5 holes!
At lunch the match was very close with one of our pairs down, but the other 2 holding their own. As the teams set out for the afternoon rounds the threatened rain arrived, though fortunately it was not constant it did offer a challenge to caddies, balancing clubs, towels, umbrellas and keeping trollies under control! Despite the conditions there was some excellent golf played: Carol and Margaret, who had suffered a bit at the hands of an on-form 14 handicapper in the morning fought back well, taking their match to the 34th hole before succumbing. Sarah and Ros, playing second, maintained their cool and were all square after 36 holes. They set off for the 37th as the game had to be played to a conclusion, and won that hole to win our point.
Behind them, the tension mounted as the very experienced third Aldeburgh pair had really found their form after a shaky start in the morning. Despite going 2 holes down, and facing some really accurate shots to the green, Margaret and Kim kept calm (at least on the outside!) and were all square going into the 36th. A win for either team on the last hole would seal the day and in the end it came down to a superb putt from the opposition to put us out of the competition. Disappointed, but far from disgraced, our players won many well deserved complements not only for their golf but also for the spirit in which they played the game.
Once again we were well supported from the start and many thanks to those who braved the rain to cheer us on. Roll on next year!
